Webinar Landlord & Tenant Act 1954, Part II - Module 5 - Interim Rent - On-Demand Webinar

This webinar is one of a series aimed at the junior lawyer whose caseload will feature the business security of tenure regime under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954. It will also serve as a refresher for those more experienced lawyers.

The rules surrounding the entitlement to and assessment of interim rent are now complicated, and it is often the case that this aspect of the lease renewal procedure is either ignored altogether, or at best dealt with as an afterthought. That means that practitioners may very easily miss a trick which would have gained an advantage for the client. Often there is not much money at stake, but one of the more recent reported cases resulted in an interim rent award of more than £15m per annum. To get the right result for the client, it is necessary to know which basis of assessment may apply, and if applicable, how to prolong the interim rent period as far as possible.

The webinar will include:

  • The background to the present interim rent rules – what are the reasons behind them?
  • How the interim rent period is identified, implications for serving notices, and when to apply
  • The different bases of valuation
  • Using the Act to maximise the interim rent period
  • Can interim rent be apportioned?
  • Retrospective adjustments
