Completing this course will enable you to:

  • Manage your own caseload of straightforward clients requiring ‘basic’ wills
  • Refer more complex matters to more senior colleagues/seek advice where required

Specifically, you will be able to:

  • Run client meetings effectively, know what questions to ask and why, and take clear instructions
  • Draft a clearly-structured basic will that reflects the instructions given
  • Recognise potential questions of testamentary capacity and undue influence, and apply some practical strategies to navigate these ethical minefields
  • Anticipate potential claims that could be made post-death, and advise your clients accordingly to mitigate the chance of a successful claim
  • Carry out a simple inheritance tax calculation
  • Be aware of and provide basic advice to clients on more complicated areas including tax reliefs, trusts, joint property and foreign assets – and know when to seek advice or do further research
  • Ensure that a will is correctly executed, and stay up-to-date with proposed reforms to the law in this area
