New year, new (professional) you?

A new year and a fresh start are often just what we need to kick start our plans for the coming months.
Many of us use this time to reflect on our personal lives, looking at what we achieved the previous year or possibly missed out on to highlight the changes we think we should make in our lives.

What can be easily overlooked is to give similar thought to our professional goals for the coming year, usually going straight back to the familiar routine of our practice instead. But taking a moment to look at where we want to be in 12 months and what we need to do to get there can have transformative effect on our year and even beyond.

Take time to reflect on the training you have done, where you would like to be in 12 months and what new skills or knowledge will be crucial for your practice. It can be unproductive and demoralising to try to pursue every avenue, so make sure you know what your priorities are and invest your time in those.

Plan your training for the next 12 months. Give yourself the best chance of being able to find the time to complete any training you would like to attend by fitting this into your schedule early, or it can easily become a last minute hassle that has to be pushed aside by other deadlines. Make a note of how the training you’ve picked will help you to achieve the objectives you’ve set for yourself.

Make the most of the multiple training options available, which can fit into the busy schedule of any lawyer. From three-hour courses to two-day intensive workshops, and from conference to snappy online learning, be sure to utilise the different options to fit your unique schedule.

Record your completion of each training as you go by collecting evidence of your participation. Take time to reflect on what you’ve learned and note this in your training record. This will come in handy when you make your SRA declaration in November.
