As the police are handed more powers and as the processes for detainees become more imbalanced, this course sets out to help experienced police station practitioners to refresh and hone their skills in order to deal with their ever changing environment. The course addresses some of the most difficult aspects of police station practice including problematic disclosure, unlawful detention, undermining legal advisers, bad character evidence and the right to silence, including how to draft and deliver client ‘statements’. It also addresses the often awkward question of conflict of interest that is now especially relevant in the light of fixed fees. The course will cover: -
- Psychologies and strategies – from first contact
- Lack of disclosure - causes and effects
- Dealing with difficult clients – keeping an arm’s length
- Conflict – recognising it and dealing with it
- To speak or, not to speak? – What value is there in a ‘statement’?
- Unlawful interviews – bad character and hearsay
- Reviews, bail and human rights
