Parental Substance Use and Child Care

Child Care practitioners will be aware that substance misuse is a major issue in a large proportion of cases in the Family Courts. This is an advanced level course for those who represent ANY party and who wish to increase their knowledge and skills in this area.

This participatory course will cover:

• Information on commonly used substances; effects, methods of use
• The context of national policies
• Models of substance use and addictive behaviour
• Assessment
• Motivation, presentation and behaviour change
• Treatment options
• Implications of substance use for parenting competence and risk

(BA, MA, MSc, Expert Witness Cert), is an independent Chartered Psychologist and HPC Registered Practitioner, providing therapeutic services, assessments in Care proceedings, research and consultancy. John has worked with substance misusers, their families and drug/alcohol services since 1982, as a practitioner, manager, trainer and consultant.
