This course is designed for managers and other staff involved in legal practice management who do not hold a legal qualification. It will enable delegates to understand the legal implications of employment law issues within their firms, provide comprehensive assistance on resolving employment disputes, deal with HR issues effectively, operate their firm's HR policies fairly, consistently and effectively ensuring they comply with employment laws and with best practice, allowing for a proactive rather than reactive management approach whilst at the same time reduce their firm's risk and exposure to employment litigation. Delegates will be given the opportunity to share their own experiences and have their particular questions answered. The course will cover:
- Contracts of Employment - written and oral contracts
- Dismissal and notice periods - notice pay, unfair dismissal, breach of contract and wrongful dismissal
- Redundancy – how to select for redundancy, consultation and offering suitable alternative employment
- Types of working arrangements – fixed term workers, part time employees and agency workers – rights and obligations
- Discipline and Grievance – when to suspend, investigation, conducting hearings, disciplinary warnings, appeal hearings, The 3 step statutory procedures and recent case law
- Discrimination – equal opportunities, diversity, age, sex, disability discrimination, harassment, race – areas to watch out for, developments in equal pay, sexual orientation, religion or belief discrimination – how this is evolving in practice
- Managing sickness absence – capability, attendance, avoiding discrimination, short term v long term absence and the pitfalls - how to avoid them!
- Family Friendly and Parental Rights – maternity laws, paternity leave and pay, adoption leave and pay, parental leave, time off for dependants and flexible working
