  Mental Health Review Tribunal Panel Course

This two day course has been approved by the Law Society to meet the requirements of the Mental Health Review Tribunal Accreditation Scheme and must be attended by any applicant seeking membership of the panel. Some knowledge of mental health law is assumed.

The 2 day programme will include:

  • * A full consideration of mental health law including statutes, statutory guidance and case law
  • MHRT origins and procedure
  • Understanding psychiatry: a guide to the principal psychiatric disorders
  • Mental disorder - the statutory definitions and changes brought about by the Mental Health Act 2007
  • Admission to hospital - the law and practice
  • Detained patients - the law
  • The nearest relative
  • Tribunal applications
  • Tribunal hearings
  • Care in the community
This course will conclude with a Mock Tribunal and the training will be delivered by means of formal presentations, case studies and group work.

Michael Butler is a Solicitor Advocate and Principal at Butler & Co Solicitors in Taunton, specialising in Criminal and Mental Health Law. Michael is a member of Central Law Training, Police Station and Criminal Litigation Accreditation Panels.
