This course is aimed to provide those who advise on consumer rights, including lawyers, paralegals, trading standards officers and advisers in Citizens Advice Bureaux, with an overview of the various laws relating to consumer rights, and the methods of enforcing them. This course will cover:
- Consumers’ rights regarding quality of goods (relevant details of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the Sale of Supply of goods to Consumers Regulations 2002)
- Parallel provisions in relation to the supply of services (the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982)
- Consumers’ rights and remedies in relation to a breach of the Sale of Goods Act
- Consumers’ rights as to the safety of goods (Consumer Protection Act 1987 and General Product Safety Regulations 2005)
- Consumers’ rights in relation unfair and misleading trade practices generally (the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Practices Regulations 2008); the 31 prohibited trade practices
- The work of the Advertising Standards Authority
- Enhanced consumer protection under the Consumer Credit Act 2006
- Enforcing rights: the role of the small claims courts, the ASA, and the Office of Fair Trading (including the OFT’s rights to obtain injunctions to prevent breaches of consumer legislation); the Consumers, Estate Agents and Redress Act 2007
- The enforcement role of local trading standards officers
