The purpose of the course is to provide delegates with a basic understanding of the institutions, procedures and a flavour of the substantive law in this increasingly important area.
The course will concentrate on the following:
- The employment law institutions - an overview of their role
- Composition and structure of employment tribunals and the remedies which can be awarded to an employee
- Employment status: the distinction in law between being "employed" and "self-employed"
- Contracts: statutory requirements for fixed term contracts, contractors and casual labour
How to amend contracts - Employer/employee rights
- Terms and conditions: issues of pay, changing terms and restructuring the terms of employment
Family Friendly Rights - Maternity; Paternity; Adoption Leave; Flexible Working; Parental Leave.
- Dismissals: the law relating to termination of employment, wrongful and unfair dismissal and the remedies available. New changes in April 2009 on unfair dismissal
Handling Grievances
Managing Attendance, including Stress related absence
- Discrimination: the law relating to sexual, racial, and disability discrimination in the workplace; the status of harassment codes
