Over six percent of all deaths are the subject of an inquest. The inquest hearing, where full evidence is heard, often precedes civil and/or criminal proceedings and can provide you with a vital opportunity for risk assessment and management.

Whether you are advising or representing potential claimants, defendants, witnesses or family members, this course gives you a comprehensive guide to Coroners’ law and practice.

The course will cover:

  • * The reforms to coronial law
  • The functions of the Coroner, including control of the body
  • The scope and purpose of the inquest
  • Preparation for and procedure at the inquest
  • Funding of representation
  • The expanded remit of the inquest under the Human Rights Act
  • Verdicts including Neglect and Unlawful Killing

Sheriff Payne is HM Coroner for Bournemouth, Poole and Eastern Dorset and has many years of coronial experience having previously been appointed Deputy Coroner in 1983. He also has had litigation experience in a busy private practice.
