This course will give Duty Solicitors the practice uplift that they often so sorely need. You will benefit not only from the formal input but also from the helpful forum style discussions covering local and regional issues in relation to both custody suites and the magistrates’ courts.

You are provided with a complete and comprehensive set of updating materials covering criminal law, practice and procedure including changes to PACE. All other recent developments will be additionally highlighted. The course fulfils the annual CPD requirements for police station and Magistrates' court work. The course will include:-

  • * Police Station Practice Update – dealing with the police and advising clients
  • Fixed and graduated fees – dealing with the DSCC and the LSC
  • Conflict Update – how, when to spot it and why it helps!
  • Magistrates' Court First Hearing - Bail, Pleas and Mode of Trial
  • Criminal Procedure Rules – Duties to the clients and the courts
  • Sentencing Update - for adults and youths

Matthew Hickling is an experienced litigator and advocate, is now a consultant and trainer in legal skills and legal practice. Formerly a Detective Inspector in the police before qualifying as a solicitor in 1990, Matthew is now the lead assessor and examiner for CLT in the Criminal Litigation Accreditation Scheme (CLAS).
