The notice issued by the Law Society and the LSC on 12 February 2010 referring to a change in deadline for completing Re-accreditation does not apply to Accreditation. To be able to claim public funding for work that is carried out in relation to asylum and immigration advice, caseworkers must be accredited.

What is the Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme?

The Law Society have introduced the scheme to assess skills and knowledge of caseworkers working in this demanding and sensitive sector.

Who’s it for?

If you are a solicitor, trainee solicitor, immigration caseworker, volunteer, agent or clerk and you wish to perform publicly funded immigration work, you must undertake accreditation at one of the levels specified below.

Who delivers the scheme?

CLT have been the sole provider of the scheme since it was introduced in April 2004.

What’s involved?

There are three levels of accreditation, namely:

  • Level 1 – Accredited Caseworker
  • Level 2 – Senior Caseworker (with or without Supervisor status)
  • Level 3 – Advanced Caseworker (with or without Supervisor status)

For further information regarding Level 3 please contact the The Law Society on 0870 606 2566 or email accreditation@lawsociety.org.uk

The assessments and examinations for level 1 or 2 can be taken within the same exam round and attempted in any order (subject to current LSC restrictions and time limits).

In order to choose the level you wish to be assessed at you should refer to The Law Society's Written Standards. The Standards can be found on The Law Society's Immigration and Asylum website.

CLT cannot offer advice on which level you should choose.
